I’ll Be There… Will You? The Active Sunderland Big Family Fun Run 2016

Commonwealth Games athlete Aly Dixon, marathon runner with Sunderland Strollers encouraging everyone to take part in the Active Sunderland BIG Family Fun Run

With a focus on fun running for people of all ages and abilities, this year’s Active Sunderland BIG Family Fun Run offers everyone the opportunity to get active, have fun and have a great day out.

The run will start at 4pm on Saturday 30 April in Mowbray Park, Sunderland.  The run is either 1.5km or 3km run suitable for all ages and abilities and this year the entry fee includes the new Active Sunderland BIG Events technical t-shirt, medal and a goody bag.

Councillor Barry Curran, Mayor of Sunderland, said: “It’s fantastic to see events like this happening in our city. The Active Sunderland Big Family Fun Run is great fun for everyone in the family and for all ages and abilities.”

He added “The emphasis is very much on having a fun experience, this is a great way for young children and their parents to join in and have a great day out. As well as the run everyone can enjoy a great programme of fun family activities, it really is the perfect way to have a healthy day out with friends or family”

As well the many fun runners taking part on the day, a number of well known Sunderland personalities will also be present on the day to support the event.

Aly Dixon, Sunderland’s top class distance runner and potential marathon representative for Great Britain at this year’s Olympics, said “This is a fantastic opportunity for everyone to get involved in a family running event in our city. It doesn’t matter if you walk, jog or run the course it’s about having fun and being involved. The extended family fun activities will ensure that there is something for everyone and it really will be a great day”.

She added, I’ll be there….will you?

The event is being supported by a number of athletics clubs working together with Active Sunderland to promote and increase participation in running across the city.

Geoff Fenwick , the junior co-ordinator for Houghton Harriers said” The Active Family Fun Run is an ideal opportunity for everyone to participate, irrespective of ability and Houghton Harriers are pleased to be supporting this event”

There are many new things to look forward to at this year’s event. The runs will be preceded at 1pmwith the start of the family fun programme of activities within Mowbray Park. These will consist of ‘have a go’ sports taster sessions and traditional family sports day activities.

Additionally all runners participating in the BIG Family Fun Run can take part in the inaugural 600m Dash on Sunday 1 May, prior to the Siglion Sunderland City 10k and Siglion Sunderland City Half Marathon at Keel Square – FREE with your entry into the BIG Family Fun Run.

The Active Sunderland BIG Family Fun Run is one of many fantastic running events for people of all ages and abilities happening in Sunderland across the weekend which includes the Siglion Sunderland City 10K and Siglion Sunderland City Half Marathon.
