The cleaning industry recognised its newest stars at the 2018 Kimberly-Clark Professional* Golden Service Awards, and Newcastle’s intu Eldon Square shopping centre is celebrating achieving the prestigious honour of the best cleaned shopping mall over 1 million square feet.
Since 1991, the biennial Golden Service Awards have celebrated innovation, excellence and the continuous improvement of standards across the professional cleaning industry. Awards were presented to winners across 14 categories at a formal ceremony at the London Hilton on Park Lane, hosted by British comedy star Sally Phillips.
57 finalists from 37 companies were shortlisted in awards, with categories spanning healthcare, office, education, retail, manufacturing, hospitality, environmental and training sectors.
Over 500 professionals from small, medium and large contract cleaning and facilities management companies, plus in-house cleaning teams, as well as local authorities and hospitals, attended the showcase event this year.

Carol McCabe, acting cleaning services manager at intu Eldon Square, said:

“We were absolutely thrilled to be originally shortlisted in this category, so to actually win the award is an amazing achievement for the dedicated team of professionals who work around the clock to keep intu Eldon Square looking its very best. We are feeling very proud at the moment, as well as being energised to keep up the good work!”

Phil Steele, general manager at intu Eldon Square, added:

“Receiving this award is testament to the dedication and hard work of the team that continually delivers outstanding commitment and passion to execute performances that raise cleaning standards. Within the centre we have four trained British Institute of Cleaning Science (BICSc) assessors, who ensure the team is coached to achieve the highest standards of cleaning.

“intu Eldon Square has committed to developing best practice in this area and, in conjunction with our ‘Steps to Success’ programme, exclusive to intu, we strive for continuous development within our teams. We are delighted to reap the rewards of this investment, and I applaud everyone involved for their continued dedication and pride in their work.”

Stephen Jones, General Manager UK, Eire and France at Kimberly-Clark Professional*, said:

“Congratulations to all the worthy winners and our new industry stars. All winners should be acknowledged as the very best in our industry. This reflects our overall objectives for the awards and our vision to create exceptional workplaces through raising industry standards. We are very grateful to all our sponsors and contributors, especially Diversey, who once again supported the awards as Gold Sponsor.”

Kimberly-Clark Professional* partnered with The British Institute of Cleaning Science (BICSc) who oversaw the independent judging.

Stan Atkins, chief executive officer at The British Institute of Cleaning Science (BICSc), added:

“Whilst we congratulate our winners, all finalists must be applauded for the highest standard of entries to date. In some categories judging was very close, and so for the first time we have also presented some well-deserved highly commended awards. What stood out to the judges this year is that those companies who are helping to raise standards in the industry are those that are most committed to investment and training.”
