Thanks to Ageing Better Middlesbrough more than 3000 people, aged 50 and over, are better connected to their communities, and have more opportunity to get out and try new activities.
The six-year programme, funded by the National Lottery Community Fund, is helping people feel less lonely through its free membership, a diverse range of community activities and a dedicated team of friendly staff who make it their mission to help people over 50 find joy in company and activity.
Rebecca Hughes, Communications and Marketing Officer for Ageing Better Middlesbrough, said: “People from across our town, with all different backgrounds, have signed up as our members for free. They tell us that they feel proud to be part of Ageing Better.
“We know it can feel daunting to take that first step, to go to a new group, or fill in a membership form, but once you do our lovely staff will be there to support you. As a friendly face at one of our taster sessions, or by working closely with you to find out what you want from life and helping you build your confidence to go and get it.
“Our mission is to create an Age Friendly place to live and for us that means being part of a movement where people of all ages lead happy and healthy lives – and that is about human connections and doing stuff you love.”
Members receive a free newsletter, What’s On activity guide and a taster session programme that includes everything from Bollywood dancing and carpet bowls, to sessions that help people use their mobile phone and other devices.
Ageing Better Middlesbrough member, 65-year-old Malcolm Pearson, from Acklam, said: “When you read other people’s stories in the newsletter you think, wow!
“If they have taken the massive step to do something why can’t we, and it is that first step that is the hard part.
“I say, try it and if you do not like it move on and try something else. There is so much choice for you.”
