North East Connected

Hopping Across The North East From Hub To Hub

Transformers, fire-performers, live music and a fantastic firework finale will be helping visitors celebrate the start of a new year at the seafront in Sunderland.

On Saturday December 31 join host of Sunderland’s Sun FM’s Big Drive Home programme Tim West between 5pm and 6pm at Seaburn’s Cliffe Park as he hosts some great entertainment for all the family.

Sunderland City Council’s Portfolio Holder for Public Health, Wellness and Culture Councillor, John Kelly said: “This year our city has continued to host some fantastic events and activities. We’ve had a fantastic number of visitors enjoying everything from The Sunderland International Airshow and Illuminations to Beyoncé at the Stadium of Light and the current British library Punk 74-76 exhibition at Sunderland Museum, Library and Winter Gardens, every year we have something for everyone.

“This year it has been great to see so many people enjoying themselves and making the most of Sunderland and its stunning locations. This event will be no exception, with a great opportunity to spend some time along our multi-award winning seafront and take the opportunity to enjoy all it has to offer.

“We are already planning events for next year and indeed with the Tall Ships Races we’ve already begun to organise events for 2018. I’d like to thank all of our external partners, local businesses and colleagues across the council who have worked hard throughout the year to make all this possible. I really hope that everyone gets behind as many events as possible and of course supports Sunderland’s bid to be UK City of culture in 2021.

Other attractions on the day include a children’s fairground, on-site catering, live music performed by local singer Ashleigh Humble as well as Sunderland based artist Penella Bee and her team performing a range of dazzling acts using fire and lights.

Penella, added:” We’re really proud to be asked to help celebrate bringing in the New Year in Sunderland. With all the events that have happened this year and those I’m sure are in the pipeline for 2017 including my very own project GLOW which I’ll be showcasing next year, our city has a lot to offer. I look forward to seeing as many people as possible on New Year’s Eve as we have some very special routines planned that we hope everyone enjoys.”

The firework extravaganza will be delivered by “Reaction Fireworks”. The County Durham based firm has staged thousands of professional firework displays over the past 25 years and are regarded both in the industry and by our clients as one of the most creative and exciting firework companies in the UK. They have won many prestigious national awards including the British National Firework Championships, Scottish Firework Championships and silver at the British Musical Championships.

The display will start at around 5.50pm, with perfect viewing from Cliffe Park and along the seafront.
