A leading Teesside civil engineering company has delivered a contract to Middlesbrough Council that will see 82 properties on the Saltersgill Estate protected from flood risk.
Lynas Engineers based in the Wilton Centre, Redcar was commissioned by the council to develop a comprehensive flood prevention scheme that will ensure – in the event of prolonged rainfall – the Saltersgill properties will be unaffected by flooding.
The scheme – which includes two dry basins and one wet pond – has been designed to hold the 37 hectares surrounding the estate during periods of prolonged rainfall. The design also accounts for a 1 in 100-year critical storm and a 30% change in climate, ensuring a controlled release of flood water into an adjacent ditch.
Speaking about the project, Rob Lynas, MD and founder of Lynas Engineering said: “We are delighted to have been commissioned by Middlesbrough Council to develop this very important scheme for the residents of the Saltersgill Estate.
“We know this is an area prone to flooding and for residents living in such areas this is always a concern. This flood prevention scheme has been tested using the most rigorous of storm conditions to ensure that – should the area be hit by a critical storm – the drainage systems are in place to cope with it.”
As part of the flood alleviation design, Lynas Engineers has incorporated soft sustainable drainage (SuDS) which ensures protection of the 82 properties.
The Lynas team – as part of its development of the flood prevention scheme – produced a 3D model to accurately demonstrate how work would be carried out and how the landscape would finally look.
