Screen Shot 2015-11-27 at 14.23.28Local children’s charity, Children North East, have been nominated for two prestigious Children and Young People Now Awards.

Our first nomination is for The Safeguarding Award.  Our Gateshead Crisis Intervention project was shortlisted for increasing the safety of children and young people living in households where parental drug or alcohol misuse, domestic abuse and violence, and poor mental health is having a negative impact on the children and young people in the household.

Our second nomination is for The Arts and Culture Award.  Through funding received from Youth Music and partnering with Sage Gateshead, a programme of activities was devised to involve parents and children in musical activity.  Different term time sessions were delivered for parents and pre-school children as well as whole family sessions within school holidays.

Lesley Hutchinson, Service Manager at Children North East, said: “Having our services shortlisted for two of these prestigious awards is fantastic.  We face many challenges in the support we provide children, young people and families and having this recognition shows the quality of work we are able to provide and of the excellent partnerships we have developed with Gateshead Council and Sage Gateshead to deliver these services.”

To enable three of our nominated staff to attend the awards, Virgin Trains East Coast have generously donated the train tickets for travel to the awards ceremony held at the Hurlingham Club in London on Thursday 26th November.

Michelle Beveridge, Crew Manager and Community Ambassador from Virgin Trains East Coast, said: “I first met with Children North East in August of this year and was so touched by the amazing work they have been doing across the North East with Children and Young People for so many years.  We instantly forged a great relationship with Children North East and myself and the team here at Virgin Trains East Coast will continue to support them in every way possible. When I heard they were nominated for these 2 prestigious awards I could not have been happier for them, they absolutely deserve to be nominated and wish them all the very best.”

The Children and Young People Now Awards bring national recognition for projects and services that make a difference to children, young people and families.  Now in its tenth year, the results of this year’s nominations will be announced at a gala ceremony held at the Hurlingham Club in London on Thursday 26th November.
