DOG OWNERS across Stockton Borough are being urged to make a good start to 2017 by checking their pets are microchipped.
Legislation introduced nationally last April made it compulsory for owners to microchip their dogs and their information to be kept up to date.
Microchipping is a quick and easy procedure. Not only does it provides peace of mind to the owner, as dogs which get lost or stolen can be quickly reunited with their owners, but it also prevents charities and the Council meeting the cost of dogs needing to be fed, housed in kennels and where necessary, rehomed.
Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council’s Animal Welfare Team holds free microchipping appointments on the second and fourth Thursday of every month in their offices on Church Road.
Councillor Steve Nelson, Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Access, Communities and Community Safety, said: “Why not make it your New Year’s resolution to get your dog microchipped, if you haven’t already?
“If your dog is chipped it will save you worrying about being reunited with your pet if it goes missing, something which can be a very upsetting and stressful experience.
“We are here to advise and help so we are encouraging people to make use of our free microchipping service. The courts can impose hefty fines for those who choose not to take up the help available so make sure you don’t get caught out.
“If your dog is already chipped, and your circumstances change, you also need to update your personal details to make sure that your dog can be returned to you if it wanders too far from home.”
