Maritime Volunteers to pay Respects Afloat

CaptureNewcastle Quayside shoppers will stop to pay their respects on Remembrance Sunday when members of the Northumbria Unit of the Maritime Volunteer Service (MVS) charity host a small afloat tribute to the Fallen.

The MVS unit will lead a small procession of vessels up the river before stopping between the iconic Millennium and Tyne Bridges to take part in the two-minute silence and placing a special wreath into the river.

The event is being organised following a successful pilot last year when the unit paid its own tribute on-board its patrol boat.

MVS Volunteer Officer Angela Carrington said;

“Last year was a special moment for the unit and a great opportunity to show the community what we do. We were humbled when the crowd on the quayside applauded after the silence and the laying of the wreath. It shows how much Remembrance Sunday means to the people of the North East and we look forward to paying our respects again this Sunday.

”We’ll be joined by other members of the river community including Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service, the North East Maritime Trust and individuals too.”
