Markets Matter in Stockton

logo-landscapeNESTLED alongside the range of quirky independent shops within the Enterprise Arcade, the cafés and eateries and larger High Street chains – Stockton’s iconic traditional market has been underpinning the town’s retail offer for over 700 years.

Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council has teamed up with the National Market Traders Federation to host a Making Markets Matter event on Saturday 14 May to encourage people to shop locally and make the most of the town’s weekly market which runs every Wednesday, Friday and Saturday.

Activities on offer include a special ‘Voucher Vault’ with the chance to catch market vouchers to win prizes, a ‘fruit and veg hunt’ taking place across the town centre with a prize of £101 on offer and a bespoke version of ‘Play Your Cards Right’.

Children can also enjoy free face painting and there’ll also be a professional chef on hand to demonstrate how healthy cooking can be done using market produce.

Councillor Nigel Cooke, Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Transport, said: “Markets have been playing a key role in Stockton Borough’s shopping offer for over 700 years and it is important we continue to promote and value them.

“The traditional market here in Stockton always has a great atmosphere as the bustling stalls ply their trade in such a great setting as the regenerated High Street.

“We have strong links with the National Market Traders Federation who do such good work to fight for a positive future for markets and our valued traders. This event on Saturday will showcase all that is great about markets in Stockton and I’d encourage everyone to come and support their local market and take a look at what is on offer.”

The Making Markets Matter event takes place this Saturday (14 May) between 10am and 3.30pm on Stockton High Street.

The event is free to attend and free parking for one hour is available in all Town Centre short stay, off-street car parks.
