Mazda MX-5s from the Mazda UK press and heritage fleet took part in a novel track driving event last weekend. Organised by Mission Motorsport – The Forces Motorsport Charity and Trac Mon Circuit in Anglesey, the MX-5s joined around 25 other cars to take part in the UK’s first ever non-competitive track driving event held on an unlit track in complete darkness.
This ‘night at the track’ event gave participants the chance to experience the unique sensations of driving on track at speed in darkness. Giving the drivers a glimpse of the sensations of a 24-hour race, the full 2.1-mile International Circuit was used on a crisp moonlit night that miraculously delivered a dry track in early January. With its precise handling balance, communicative chassis and engaging driver feedback, the Mazda MX-5 was the perfect car for this unique Friday night driving experience.
Using completely road standard MX-5s, the UK media drivers took the track alongside a mix of race cars, modified track cars and sports cars – and left enthralled by track driving at night. Commenting on the event, Mission Motorsport CEO, James Cameron, said: “this first of a kind event offered drivers the rare opportunity to experience night driving on an unlit circuit and develop their skills in no-light conditions that are normally reserved for those lucky enough to take part in a 24-Hour race or our Race of Remembrance here in Anglesey.”
On a day when Mission Motorsport also supported Trac Mon Anglesey Circuit in the signing of the Armed Forces Covenant – a public pledge to support the UK’s armed forces community, the Mazda MX-30 R-EV ‘poppy art car’ designed by Mission Motorsport also took to the track and assisted in plug-in hybrid safety training for the circuit marshals.
However, it was the experience of driving MX-5s at speed in darkness around the undulating and challenging Anglesey Circuit that left the biggest smile on the faces of the journalists who took part in this unique track driving experience.
