EID celebrations were shared with Middlesbrough care home residents at a Muslim community group lunch.

The Islamic Diversity Centre (ICD) North East invited the elderly residents from The Gables Care Home to share homemade curry and rice.

The third annual event was organised by the Muslim community in North Ormesby to encourage intercommunity understanding and appreciation.

It was held at The Trinity Centre at The Market Place, North Ormesby.

Cath Taylor, activities coordinator at The Gables Care Home, on Highfield Road, said: “Marlene, Mary and Jim really enjoyed going out for lunch.

“The change of scene was very stimulating as was meeting with elderly members of the Asian and Chinese communities.

“We’d like to thank the IDC for inviting us along and we’re already looking forward to next year’s celebrations.”

Naaila Rehman, who leads social initiatives for the IDC North East, said: “Combatting isolation and loneliness among elderly people is so important.

“Bringing people together for a proper community centred lunch creates the opportunity for everyone to get to know their neighbours and forge new friendships, regardless of race or religion.

“This lunch was an Eid special to mark the end of Ramadan and we wanted to involve the community of North Ormesby in our celebrations.  More lunches to take place in the near future with everyone welcome.”
