A TALK on the history of the Transporter Bridge is set to take place as part of Middlesbrough’s Local History Month.
Bridge supervisor John Ivison will lead the talk at the Transporter Bridge Visitor Centre on Tuesday, May 10 from 1pm.
The talk explores the story of the landmark, which recently underwent enhancement and improvement work as part of an extensive Heritage Lottery Fund-supported project, and looks at the history of river crossings, the construction of the Transporter Bridge and the role of the bridge in transporting users across the ‘steel river’ for over a century.
Historic images from the collections of Teesside Archives and Middlesbrough Reference Library feature as part of the presentation.
Visitors will also have the opportunity to book on the new Transporter Bridge Visitor Experience which includes a tour of the site, trip across the gondola and ascent to the 160ft high walkway.
Mr Ivison said: “We look forward to welcoming visitors to the Bridge for the first Middlesbrough Local History Month since the launch of the HLF-supported Tees Transporter Bridge Visitor Experience Project.
“We hope that many of the visitors take up the opportunity to also enjoy a tour of the bridge, including a trip to the top of the Bridge in the newly installed lift.”
The talk is part of an extensive programme of activity as part of Middlesbrough Local History Month which also features exhibitions, film screenings and guided walks across the town, providing opportunities to discover Middlesbrough’s fantastic heritage.
