The leading housebuilder is working with primary schools in Teesside to help educate youngsters about general health and safety as well as the importance of staying safe near construction sites.

As part of the initiative, children from St Joseph’s RC Primary School near Miller Homes’ Clairville Grange development in Middlesbrough and St Clare’s RC Primary School near the housebuilder’s Acklam Woods development in Acklam enjoyed health and safety sessions from Paul Fairlamb, one of the company’s safety, health and environment (SHE) advisers.

During his visits to the schools, Paul gave presentations on general health and safety, as well as getting the children involved with some fun and interactive activities, including a spot the sign quiz and the chance to dress up like a Miller Homes construction worker, wearing high visibility jackets, hard hats, ear defenders and protective gloves.

The children also received a branded Miller Homes reflective wrist band to help them to be safe and seen whilst playing outside, or on their commute to and from school now that the dark winter nights have arrived.

Following these sessions, the children will be invited to their local Miller Homes development in the New Year, where they will further their learning on health and safety as they enjoy a special tour of the developments.

Paul Fairlamb, Miller Homes North East’s SHE adviser, said: “As a business it’s very important to us that we work closely with the local communities in which we operate.

“Now that the dark winter nights are upon us, health and safety is often at the forefront of everyone’s mind and we wanted to take the opportunity to provide some guidance to children living close to our sites about the importance of being aware of potential hazards.  By heightening their awareness children can continue to have fun without putting themselves or others at unnecessary risk.

“It was great to meet the children and I hope that they enjoyed learning about health and safety. Although there is a serious message behind this initiative, the sessions are designed to ensure that the children develop an understanding of the importance of health and safety in everyday life in a fun and interactive way.”
