Durham’s Farmers’ and Producers’ Market will be much more than ‘one market’ this coming Thursday (16th June) as the Market Place hosts nine additional stalls, set up and manned by children from regional schools.
The school children are participating in the Soil Association’s Food for Life project, which teaches them about food production 100 years ago during World War 1. They will be selling foods they have produced, based on what they have learned throughout the project.
The newly inaugurated Right Worshipful The Mayor of Durham, Councillor Edward Bell, will be visiting the market to tour the market stalls and visit each school’s stall. He will also be taking time to enjoy the musical entertainment being provided by Sedgefield Community College Band, a band made up of approximately 15 students aged between 11 and 13.

The children are always enthusiastic market traders, and eager to explain to visitors what they have prepared for their stall and why.

We’re looking forward to introducing him to our producers, all of them independent businesses producing high quality produce within a few miles of Durham. This market is the ideal opportunity to stock up on locally produced food, drink, homewares, gifts and more.”
The Farmers’ and Producers’ Market will be open from 9am with a wide range of stalls supplying locally-grown vegetables, locally-reared meat, cheeses, drinks, bread and cakes, and drinks. There will also be stalls selling homewares, hand-crafted items, and gifts. Additionally, at the June Farmers’ and Producers’ Market, Durham County Council’s Environmental Team will have a stall for Environment Day, promoting ways of reducing residents’ carbon footprint, and living ‘greener’.
