The Port of Tyne was nominated by South Shields MP Emma Lewell-Buck and shortlisted amongst ten other UK companies each with formidable corporate and social responsibility programmes – including: Fujitsu UK, London City Airport Ltd, Marks & Spencer plc and Sony UK Technology Centre.

In a presentation ceremony held 15 July at the House of Commons, the National Responsible Business Champion award was presented to London City Airport.  The Port of Tyne was among the shortlisted companies chosen from hundreds of constituencies across the country.

Andrew Moffat, Port of Tyne Chief Executive Officer, said: “The National Responsible Business Champion awards help to celebrate business partnerships and we were delighted to be nominated by Emma.  Being shortlisted in the top ten among such prominent leading UK businesses is an honour and everyone at the Port of Tyne is very proud to be in such prestigious company.”

The Chair of the Judges, Baroness Greengross, said: “We were really impressed by the quality of the nominations we received. We had nominations from every part of the UK – England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales – and the shortlisted companies represent the very best example UK businesses working to support the communities in which they operate.”

Emma Lewell-Buck MP for South Shields, said: “Each year the Port adds some half a billion to the economy, supporting thousands of jobs and hundreds of organisations. The Port of Tyne is a great example of responsible business not just in South Shields but nationally and internationally and I am extremely proud that the Port has been recognised as one of the most outstanding companies in Britain for investing in its local community. The Port is living proof that businesses are at their best when they have strong links with their local area, and where business and the community succeed together.”

The announcement for the National Responsible Business Champion award comes weeks after the Port of Tyne won The Journal Arts and Business Partnership Award in The Culture Awards and The Heart of the Community Award for Tyneside and Northumberland in the North East Business Awards 2015.
