New larger premises for Stockton's fledgling independentsTHE Mayor of Stockton has officially opened a new, larger Enterprise Arcade on Stockton High Street.

Yesterday (5 November) Councillor Barbara Inman cut the opening ribbon and met the fledgling businesses which are based there.

35-37 High Street provides low cost, low risk retail space for up to 16 fledgling retailers.

The Enterprise Arcade first opened its doors three years ago and its success in supporting the development of new businesses has led to its expansion.

Mayor of Stockton, Councillor Barbara Inman, said: “The Enterprise Arcade is a real gem on Stockton High Street.  Where else can you find a hub of independent shops, all offering something different to most other town centres and retail centres all under one roof?

“It was a pleasure to meet the businesses based in the Arcade and I would encourage everyone to make it their first port of call when looking for special gifts this Christmas.”

Stockton Council’s Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Transport, Councillor Mike Smith, added: “35-37 High Street has been beautifully transformed through Stockton’s Grants for Heritage Building Scheme. Both the interior and exterior have been renovated to an incredibly high standard.  The striking 140 year old building is in a prominent position right at the heart of Stockton Town Centre.  Located opposite the new water feature and seating area, it is a perfect location for new businesses to test trade their retail ideas.”

New traders based in the expanded Enterprise Arcade include:

  • A milkshake bar
  • Vintage collectables and clothing
  • Homemade cupcakes, traybakes and jams
  • Fabrics and embroidery
  • Personalised products
  • Photography
  • IT support and gaming
  • Handmade soaps

Two of the businesses which were based in the old arcade in Wellington Square have also moved into the new, larger location:

  • Expressions Re-Born Babies which specialises in making and selling re-born dolls
  • Samantha Grig Knitwear which offer luxury handmade knitwear.

A number of other traders are also expected to join them in the coming weeks.

Meanwhile Poppy Rose which sells a range of uniquely handcrafted gifts, jewellery and homewares has graduated from the Enterprise Arcade and will soon move into a unit on Silver Street and Funky Boutique Furniture selling shabby chic items has moved to Prince Regent Street.

Stockton Council’s Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Transport, Councillor Mike Smith, added: “This scheme has already helped a number of people create robust and sustainable businesses in Stockton and through this larger facility we are going to be able to help even more new traders follow in their footsteps.”

Stockton Council’s Enterprise Arcade offers a full package of business support to potential retailers provided by “B-Supplied”.

35-37 High Street has been renovated and refurbished using funding from Stockton Council and the Heritage Lottery Fund through Stockton’s ‘Grants for Heritage Buildings’ scheme.

The Enterprise Arcade opening hours are MondaySaturday, 9.30am-5pm.
