Emma Fisk’s Hot Club du Nord

Emma Fisk’s Hot Club du Nord bring to life the classic repertoire of Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli‘s Hot Club de France, conjuring up the swinging Gypsy Jazz of 1930s Paris.

Featuring 2018 British Jazz Awards Nominee, Emma Fisk on violin; James Birkett and David Harris on guitars and Bruce Rollo on double bass, Hot Club du Nord combines instrumental virtuosity, a deep love of the gypsy jazz style and a joyful energy that is absolutely infectious!

Currently touring their debut album featuring fresh and inspired interpretations of classics such as Exactly Like You, Coquette, Belleville and J’Attendrai, Hot Club du Nord is delighted to be back at Sage Gateshead.

Seyed Ali Jaberi and the Hamdel Ensemble

Seyed Ali Jaberi is a world renowned, award-winning maestro of the tanbour, whose albums have been hugely popular amongst fans of traditional Sufi music. He is considered to be among the foremost tanbour virtuosi in the Persian speaking world, and is currently touring and performing worldwide.

He has released five albums; two of which received 4 star reviews in Songlines; Psalms of Loneliness, 2010 and All Because of Love, released with The Hamdel Ensemble in 2018.

The Hamdel Ensemble is a highly acclaimed contemporary Persian Sufi music ensemble, who has performed worldwide.

Formed in Iran in 1997, The Hamdel Ensemble gathers and adapts traditional Persian folk and sufi music; sharing its unique language, culture and history and performing breathtakingly beautiful music for global audiences.

In 2019 Seyed Ali Jaberi and the Hamdel Ensemble will accompany distinguished Iranian traditional singer, Shahram Nazeri, as well as embarking on their first UK tour of All Because of Love, Jaberi’s unique interdisciplinary production exploring the life and work of Persia’s beloved mystic poet, Rumi.

Mostly Autumn

Winners of Best Track 2017 Sight of Day and best female vocalist 2017 (Olivia Sparnenn-Josh) in the CRS awards 2017, Mostly Autumn have built their fan base through the old-fashioned, but highly effective, way of playing live at every opportunity.

Counted amongst the top 100 best prog bands of all time, their musical palette is diverse, and while they draw on influences from the golden age of seventies’ rock, they have developed their own unique sound and style that both captures some of the essence of that heady era and yet looks forward into the future.

Mostly Autumn will be showcasing their latest album White Rainbow – described as an emotional masterpiece!

The songs of Barry White starring Peabo Bryson Accompanied by the Leo Green Orchestra

Thursday 24 October, 8pm, Sage One

International soul star Peabo Bryson, who won Grammy awards for his chart-topping Disney duets with Celine Dion and Regina Belle, is the latest act announced as part of BBC Radio 2’s  Friday Night Is Music Night LIVE, a new initiative which sees a range of high profile acts touring the UK in celebration of iconic songwriters.

Alongside tours by Tom Chaplin and Beverley Knight, who will perform the songs of Queen and Stevie Wonder respectively, Bryson will partner with the Leo Green Orchestra as he takes to the road to pay tribute to the great disco-era crooner Barry White.

Folkworks: RANT

RANT is the meeting of 4 of Scotland’s finest fiddle players, two from the Shetland Islands and two from the Highlands. Nominated in the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards 2014 for Best Traditional track, they tour their unique brand of chamber-folk far and wide.

Bethany Reid, Jenna Reid, Lauren MacColl and Anna Massie join forces to create a sound which is both rich and lush, yet retaining all the bite and spark synonymous with a Scottish fiddle player. Using just their fiddles, they weave a tapestry of melodies, textures, layers and sounds. Known for their work as soloists and with various bands, this is a celebration of the instrument they all have a passion for.

An Evening with Margaret Atwood LIVE

On September 10th, the wait is over. The Testaments, Margaret Atwood’s hugely anticipated sequel to The Handmaid’s Tale, is revealed.

Fane Productions presents an evening with the Canadian novelist, poet, literary critic and inventor to celebrate this momentous publication. The appearance of The Handmaid’s Tale in 1985 and the current, Emmy-award winning television series have created a cultural phenomenon, as handmaids have become a symbol of women’s rights, standing against misogyny and oppression.

Interviewed live on stage the conversation will span the length of Atwood’s remarkable career, her diverse range of works and why she has returned to her seminal story, 34 years later.

Adam Ant: Friend or Foe Tour

Following a world tour to sold-out venues throughout the United Kingdom, USA, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, Adam Ant confirms his 2019 Friend or Foe UK Tour which is coming to Sage Gateshead on Saturday 9 November.

The Friend or Foe album was Adam’s first release as a solo artist and included 3 hit singles. The massive hit Goody Two Shoes reached number 1 in the UK, was also number 1 in Australia and hit number 6 in the USA Billboard Chart. Friend or Foe, the single, was another top ten hit in the UK while Desperate But Not Serious was the album’s third UK smash. Friend or Foe his most successful solo album to date, made number 5 in the UK and was certified gold album status on both sides of the Atlantic after selling more than 100,000 copies. In the USA, the album reached number 16 on the Billboard album chart and turned Adam Ant into a household name, resulting in a Grammy nomination for Best New Artist and an MTV Award for Sexiest Man Alive!

Mike Peters presents The Alarm – Hurricane Of Change Tour 2019

The Alarm lead singer and songwriter Mike Peters, will present The Alarm – Hurricane of Change 30th Anniversary Acoustic Tour which comes to Sage Gateshead Friday 15 November.

The tour will honour The Alarm’s late 1980’s trilogy of iconic album’s Eye Of The Hurricane, Electric Folklore and Change, and will feature intimate acoustic readings of some of The Alarm’s most famous songs such as Rain In The Summertime (1987 – International Top 20 Hit), Sold Me Down The River (1989 – Number 1 Rock Song in the USA) and A New South Wales (1990 UK Top 40).

The Hurricane of Change tour will be performed solo with a first set dedicated to Eye Of The Hurricane followed by a second performance of Change along with a third set featuring songs from The Alarm’s classic live recording Electric Folklore.

Burns Night Dinner and Ceilidh

Friday 24 & Saturday 25 January, 2020. 7pm, Northern Rock Foundation Hall

Cheer up a dreary January with an evening of whisky, haggis and bagpipes with a good dose of fun and laughter at Sage Gateshead.

Celebrate the birthday of one of Scotland’s most important literacy figures, Robert Burns with traditional poetry readings, a two-course dinner of classic Scottish dishes, all topped off with a toast of wee whisky. Followed by a ceilidh with a whirling, fun-filled evening of jigs, reels and live entertainment.
