Newcastle United: Daryl Murphy Signs

Daryl MurphyStriker Daryl Murphy has become Newcastle United’s latest signing, after arriving from Ipswich Town for an undisclosed fee.

The 33-year-old has agreed a two-year contract at St. James’ Park and becomes the tenth new face in the Magpies’ first team squad this summer.

During five seasons at Portman Road, Murphy scored 67 goals in 225 appearances, with 50 of those coming in the last three seasons.

Previously, the front man had also played for Celtic, Sheffield Wednesday, Sunderland, Waterford United, Harrow Borough and Luton Town.

Murphy is also a 23-cap Republic of Ireland international, and featured for his country at Euro 2016.

“I’m absolutely delighted to get it over the line and really looking forward to it,” said Murphy.

“When I knew the Club was interested, it was a no-brainer for me so I’m happy it’s all done.

“I think with the squad of players that the Club have now, there’s no reason why we shouldn’t be there or thereabouts come the end of the season.”

Newcastle United manager Rafa Benitez added: “Daryl has experience and has proven that he can score goals in the Championship.

“He gives us another option in attack and we could see from this weekend’s game against Brighton that we needed more bodies up front.

“Daryl has a good attitude and he can be very important for us this season.”
