News from British Basketball League: A ‘Frantic Friday’ sees five players put pen to paper

A busy day of signings sees British Basketball head into the weekend on a real high. 

The Great Britain women’s basketball team are making history at the FIBA Women’s EuroBasket 2019. The GB women’s team are in semi-final heaven with an historic game against France to look forward to. In the process they have secured a place in the Olympic Qualification Tournament for Tokyo 2020.
 
As this was sinking in, it was then announced that both the GB games would be shown live on the BBC Sport website.
 
At the same time as all this news was breaking – signings for the upcoming season were coming in thick and very fast, resulting in a total of five player announcements for the 2019/20 British Basketball League season. 

The first news came from Plymouth Raiders as rookie Tyrell Johnson became Coach James’ fourth signing and eighth addition for the 2019/20 season, he will begin his professional career with Plymouth after graduating from Appalachian State University.

This was followed by two announcements from Bristol Flyers.

Chris Taylor will remain with Bristol Flyers for the upcoming season. The 28-year-old British guard enters his third season with the club after joining from Derby Trailblazers in the summer of 2017.

This news was then swiftly followed by confirmation that Panos Mayindombe has extended his stay with the Flyers. The 31-year-old combo guard enters his third season with the club, after joining from Durham Wildcats in August 2017.

Mayindombe and Taylor make up a total of six players to commit to Andreas Kapoulas’ squad for the 2019/20 campaign. They follow recent announcements regarding Lewis Champion, Fred Thomas, Daniel Edozie and Marcus Delpeche.

It was then Leicester Riders turn to get in on the action. The Riders announced Andy Thomson will return for the upcoming season. This will see Thomson enter his fourth season with the Riders after helping the club retain the British Basketball League Playoff Trophy at the O2 Arena this May, his first trophy lift as Captain.
 
The final BBL player announcement for the day was made by Manchester Giants. The Giants announced the signing of Del’vin Dickerson. Dickerson, a 6’6 American forward joins from Argentinian club Gimnasia Y Esgrima where the 26-year-old Houston native averaged 16 points and 6 rebounds.
