Paul Carrack plus Grainne Duffy

Monday 5 March, 7.30pm, Sage One

Paul Carrack is one the UK’s great singer songwriters and multi-instrumentalists. Balancing his career between his solo work and guesting on the current Eric Clapton album and tour, his widely-varied CV also includes Roxy Music, BB King, Nick Lowe, Roger Waters, Squeeze, Mike + Mechanics, Elton John, The Smiths and Ringo Starr.

He has written classics, including How Long, co-written Love Will Keep Us Alive for the Eagles and Over My Shoulder with Mike Rutherford. However, his other career is his real passion and that is the solo Paul Carrack. He has now recorded 18 solo albums and the latest, Soul Shadows, was his highest chart entry to date. His sold-out shows have created a fan base who have come to love his incredible live performances and they are not to be missed.

This much-loved blue-eyed soul singer, and firm favourite with Radio 2 listeners, continues to stride forward on a hot streak of creativity that shows no signs of slowing down.

Elkie Brooks – Live in Concert

Thursday 8 March, 7pm, Sage One

Long before the end of a live show and the frequent standing ovations that accompany it, there comes a point where Elkie does something so amazing that it leaves her audience almost spellbound. It could be a particularly emotional rendition of one of her ballads, a powerhouse blues vocal or one of her trademark impossibly long notes that leaves the audience mesmerised.

Elkie will be performing her biggest hits, including Pearl’s A Singer, Lilac Wine, Fool (If You think It’s Over), Don’t Cry Out Loud and No More The Fool, as well as many more, as featured on her recent hit album Elkie Brooks – Pearls – The Very Best Of.

BBC Radio 3 Free Thinking Festival 2018

Friday 9 March – Sunday 11 March, Various time, Sage Gateshead

BBC Radio 3 welcomes the Free Thinking Festival all weekend at Sage Gateshead. A throng of talented individuals are gathering together to wrestle, debate and celebrate the theme of this year’s festival: The One and the Many. Whether it’s the impact of social media, the joy of stand-up comedy, or the future of democracy, the panels will be considering the relationship between the crowd and the individual in our age of hyper-connectivity.

There probably isn’t another art form that demonstrates the magic of this interplay more than music, and Radio 3’s aim is to connect audiences with remarkable music and culture. Across the weekend, Radio 3 will be broadcasting live from a pop-up studio, where you can hear an eclectic range of classical, jazz and world music brought to you by their team of presenters.

As the festival is about the collective effort, you can make your voice heard. There are more than 50 sessions to choose from and, as always, tickets are free. Places are available on the day but be sure to book in advance to witness the wisdom and insight of both the one and the many.
