Earth Day, long credited with launching the modern environmental movement, is more than an annual observance for Nike. It is fuel to continue building on decades of advancing sustainability and setting bold goals for the future. From creating innovative ways to recycle shoes nearly 30 years ago to recent measures that address climate change, Nike has long been committed to helping protect the planet to create a better future for sport. After all, there is no finish line.

This Earth Day, Nike is launching a new program on nike.com that makes it easier to search, shop and learn about the sustainable features of our products. Helping connect more people to our process, the program is devised to foster purposeful conversation about sustainable design.

What to Look for:

Shop Sustainable Navigation: It’s now easier than ever to find sustainable product on nike.com with a new “Shop Sustainable Materials” tab in the navigation.

Badging on Product Walls and Product Display Pages: Nike.com will now display a Sunburst on product made with sustainable materials. This pilot is launching with apparel products and featured apparel made from at least 50 percent sustainable materials by fabric weight (either recycled material or organic cotton), excluding trims.

“How This Was Made”:  A new tray feature on nike.com product pages, “How This Was Made,” will be available for products meeting the at least 50 percent sustainable materials threshold and will include a description of the benefits of these materials compared to conventional materials.

Sustainable Materials Descriptions under “How This Was Made”:

Sustainable Blend: Combining recycled polyester and organic cotton creates a performance material that reduces carbon emissions, water and chemical inputs compared to blends made from virgin polyester and conventionally-grown cotton. Organic cotton is grown without synthetic chemicals and uses less water than conventional cotton. Recycled polyester reduces waste and reduces carbon emissions by approximately 30 percent compared to virgin polyester.

Recycled polyester: This material in Nike products is made from recycled plastic bottles that are cleaned, shredded into flakes and converted into pellets. From there, the pellets are spun into new, high-quality yarn, delivering peak performance with a lower impact on the environment. Recycled polyester reduces waste and reduces carbon emissions by approximately 30 percent compared to virgin polyester.

Organic cotton: Created without synthetic chemicals, organically-grown cotton requires less water than conventional cotton to produce. As one of our most widely-used materials, cotton is fundamental to our business. Conventional cotton farming can have an extraordinary environmental impact due to water and pesticide use. More than half of our cotton is sourced sustainably, and Nike is one of the top users of organic and recycled cotton in the world.
