One of the most popular and enduring comedies of the 20th century is coming to Durham for four performances this week.

Noël Coward’s 1930’s play Private Lives has captivated audiences across the world and now comes to Gala as part of a major new tour.

The classic battle of the sexes sees divorced couple Elyot and Amanda enjoying a honeymoon with their new partners when they realise they are all staying at the same hotel in the South of France.

Despite their previous tempestuous relationship, the two realise they still have feelings for one another and their old spark reignites.

The play’s quick-fire dialogue was written in just three days and despite opening at London’s Phoenix Theatre in August 1930 has remained ever popular.

The comedy of manners is brought to Gala by London Classic Theatre, one of the UK’s leading touring companies which was founded by director Michael Cabot in 2000.

Private Lives takes place at 7.30pm from Thursday, 28 to Saturday 30 September as well as a Saturday matinee performance at 2.30pm.
