The North East’s newest school is hosting an open evening next week, where parents and young people from across the region will have the opportunity to find out more about the University Technical College (UTC) set to open in September 2018.
North East Futures UTC Principal Dan Sydes will be at Old Post Office, St Nicholas Street NE1 next Thursday, December 7th from 5.30pm explaining his vision for the most career-focused school in the region – for GCSE and A-level specialists in tech and health sciences.
North East Futures is a University Technical College (UTC) and will provide a different type of education for young people aged 14-19 when it opens in Newcastle for the start of the next academic year, and will be the only one north of Newton Aycliffe in County Durham. The UTC is sponsored by the University of Sunderland.
Applications are now open for GCSE and A Level students, and parents and young people are being invited along to meet the new Principal, Dan Sydes, before he takes up his new position as Principal Designate in December.
Having been Vice Principal of a UTC in Reading – one of the best performing UTC in the country, Dan is perfectly positioned to answer any questions that parents and young people may have, as well as explain the benefits of being part of an educational establishment that is focussed on preparing its pupils for the real world of work, with the support of many businesses here in the North East.
Dan Sydes, Principal Designate, North East Futures UTC said:
“We’ve been open for applications for two months and already a quarter of our initial places are signed up. The interest is from both boys and girls who want an education in science and technology with links to the IT and medical communities. I am talking to many parents and students who love the idea of a new smaller school with specialist focus.
“The new UTC is going to be a fantastic addition to the current educational landscape here. I think its central Newcastle location and cutting-edge facilities are helping the school stand out and we’ve already had a lot of registrations and interest, and I’m really looking forward to meeting some more of our prospective students next week.”
The UTC is being built at Newcastle’s Stephenson Quarter, behind Central Station, providing a city location commutable from across the region – Berwick to Darlington, Hexham to South Shields. It opens Sept 2018 with capacity ultimately for 600 students. As a non-selective school, it will be open to all students and free to attend.
It will have specialist facilities and a business-like ethos, providing an exciting environment where students, business people, academics and entrepreneurs will come together and children will mix with different people. Employers are helping design the curriculum.

The North East Futures UTC Open Evening will take place on Thursday 7 December at NBS, The Old Post Office, St Nicholas’ Street, Newcastle upon Tyne, NE1 1RH between 5.30pm and 7.30pm. Free parking is available after 5.00 pm in Newcastle City Council’s Dean Street Car Park, and the venue is opposite Newcastle Cathedral, close to Central Station.
