Northumberland author’s debut novel is inspired by their love of equestrian sports and the stunning landscape of Northumberland
Helen Newman Wood was born in Northumberland and grew up in a small village near the coast. She studied accountancy at university and has managed to successfully juggle office work and her equestrian interests throughout her life. Helen still lives in Northumberland with her husband and daughter. They are accompanied by a rabbit called Neville, a useless cat and a horse who has a strenuous aversion to the vet.
Helen says, “I have always wanted to write a book and I’m a huge fan of writers who create a world that is so well defined, I almost have to ask if the story is true. I hope that’s what I’ve done with ‘Silver Spurs and a Twelve Pound Heart’. I want the reader to fall in love with the stunning beaches, the rolling hills of Northumberland and the characters, who are to become the reader’s friends as the story progresses.”

Then, at an international competition near Inverness, catastrophe strikes for Katie, and Roger is forced to question everything he has been so certain of…
