Odyssey Systems has hosted its latest Women in Business event which debated the current impasse surrounding Brexit.

The discussion group, which meets on a regular basis at the Stockton-headquartered telecommunications company, also raised the question of whether our MPs and Parliamentary system remains fit for purpose.

The forum, which involved several leading Tees Valley businesswomen, concluded that had the negotiations been an all-female affair, a firm decision could have been reached long before now.

Christine Gilbert, director of Odyssey Systems, said: “Obviously Brexit was the main topic of conversation as there remains so much confusion as to the possible outcome.

“We had a vigorous discussion and the main point to emerge was that business requires certainty, whatever your point of view on Brexit.

“This prolonged period of indecision and confusion must be replaced by a clear plan supported by MPs which allows business leaders to plan and invest for the future.”

The group also spoke of the importance of The Girls’ Network, which works to inspire and empower girls from less advantaged areas of the North East by connecting them with a mentor and introducing them to a network of professional female role models.

Christine added: “We need to overcome the barriers that prevent women pursuing successful careers in business. To do this we must change perceptions and through the mentoring process instil a positivity and confidence in their abilities.”
