‘Outstanding’ Ofsted Praise for Thornaby Nursery

logo-landscapeA RECENT Ofsted inspection of a Stockton Borough nursery for children with complex and additional needs found it to be ‘outstanding’ and praised it for offering an ‘overwhelmingly positive atmosphere’ as well as ‘consistently innovative and inspiring’ teaching.

Inspectors found High Flyers Early Support Nursery in Thornaby to be ‘outstanding’ in all areas, from the development and behaviour of the children, to the quality of its teaching and leadership.

“The learning environment is extremely well planned and organised to support the varying needs and abilities of children who attend,” wrote Inspector Clare Wilkins in her report.

The report goes on to say that staff are extremely attentive and offer pupils an abundance of encouragement and praise. It recognised the drive and enthusiasm of Education Manager, Caroline Platts, and support staff, to promote the very best outcomes for every child. They are commended for providing a care and learning environment ‘that meets the wide range of needs of children attending’.

The nursery, which has 29 pupils aged 3 and 4, was also praised for providing a safe environment. The development, behaviour and welfare of all children was rated as ‘outstanding’ and praised the children for demonstrating ‘remarkable tolerance and respect’.

Nursery activities were highlighted for being ‘targeted extremely well’ at supporting children to build their individual skills, capabilities and develop confidence. The report also includes comments from parents that staff have helped them to grow in confidence to support their children’s learning and development at home.

Education Manager, Caroline Platts, said: “We are delighted to have maintained our ‘Outstanding’ judgement, which was originally awarded in a previous inspection in May 2011.

“This is a reflection of the hard work of all the staff, who constantly ensure the very best outcomes for our children, year after year, even with a more rigorous inspection framework. We take great pride in knowing that the children we work with, all of whom have complex and additional needs are getting the best start to their education.”

Councillor Ann McCoy, Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Children and Young People, said: “I would like to congratulate the nursery staff, manager, parents and children for this outstanding Ofsted recognition.

“There are some lovely comments in the report, particularly around the work to help each and every child to succeed, which show the nursery is providing young children with an excellent foundation for their later school years.”
