A stretch of the A1 near Gateshead will be closed overnight from tonight (Tuesday 13 October) as part of a major project to add an extra lane to the dual carriageway.
The A1 will be closed, Monday to Friday, between junction 67 at Coal House and junction 69 at Gateshead Quays on the northbound carriageway, and between junction 69 and junction 68 at Lobley Hill on the southbound carriageway, to carry out work on the central reservation and make changes to the temporary road layout.
The closures will take place between 8pm and 6am from Tuesday 13 October until Tuesday 20 October. Clearly signed diversions will be in place, including a diversion for heavy goods vehicles from junction 66 at Eighton Lodge and junction 77 for the A696.
The closures are part of the £61 million A1 Coal House to Metro Centre improvement scheme which will see the number of lanes increased from 3 to 4 in both directions between the Coal House junction and the Metro Centre junction.
