Hopping Across The North East From Hub To Hub

Putting the ‘art back into the Northern Promenade

North Tyneside Council is on the lookout for a creative and innovative person or team to create a series of public art and design works for the seafront strip in Whitley Bay.

The transformation of the Northern Promenade is a major part of the council’s Seafront Master Plan, which involves more than £36m of investment in the coast.

Work on the project is already underway and it will see the seafront strip spruced up with new surfacing, seating, shelters and other facilities.

A tender process is underway and all submissions will be shortlisted before the commission is awarded to the successful candidate.

Norma Redfearn, Elected Mayor of North Tyneside, said: “This is a wonderful opportunity for someone with artistic flair to come up with creative and original ideas to help add to the fantastic improvements taking place along the Northern Promenade.

“We want to hear from an artist or design team who can add to the vibrancy of the promenade and complement the changes being made to bring it life by using lighting to encourage even more people to visit in the evenings.

“I am hugely excited about the designs for the promenade which will spruce up the whole area and I’m really looking forward to seeing the artwork as I’m sure many residents will be too.”

The winning effort will include ideas to add creativity and breathe new life into the seafront.

It will also help revitalise the promenade and its surroundings, enhance the distinctiveness of Whitley Bay as a visitor destination and improve the visual and physical connectivity to the Spanish City site and St Mary’s Lighthouse.

And the proposals should contribute to the council’s priorities to make the town a great place to live, work and visit.

Interested artists or design teams can find out more at the Spanish City Plaza between 1pm and 3pm on Friday 12 August – please email steve.bishop@northtyneside.gov.uk in advance if you would like to attend.
