Raise a Glass to Food and Wine Pairings at Newcastle Restaurant

NORTH East foodies and wine connoisseurs are being invited to enjoy a special food and wine experience lead by an award-winning winemaker.

On Wednesday 18 May 2016, Mantra Thai Dining’s Wine Maker’s Dinner will see diners enjoy a five course menu of authentic Thai dishes, with each course accompanied by a complementing wine.

Each of the wines has been carefully chosen to bring out the flavours of Thai cuisine by Jonathan Grieve from Avondale Wine, who will lead the evening, discussing each wine and the flavour combinations created between the two elements.

Diners will be served a starter selection including King Prawn wrapped in blanket, Golden Parcel, Pork Skewers and Thai Fish Cake, followed by a fish course of Pan Fried Seabass with Mango Relish and a salad course of Grilled King Prawn with Lemongrass.

Main course options will include Salmon in Thai Green Curry, Beef in Thai Red Curry with Butternut Squash, and Lamb Shank in Massaman Curry. For dessert, diners can choose from Banana Fritter with Vanilla Ice Cream or Mantra Affogato with Amaretto.

The selection of wines served on the evening from Avondale Wine, supplied to the restaurant by wine merchants House of Townend, include Avondale Camissa Rose and the Avondale Armilla MCC Blanc de Blanc Brut – which was named the Best South African Sparkling Wine at the Champagne and Sparkling Wine World Championships in 2015.

Mantra Thai owner, Jeab Prapunwong, said: “We are keen to offer our diners an enhanced dining experience and are looking forward to welcoming Jonathan to educate our guests on the flavour combinations that can be produced when pairing wine with Thai cuisine.

“Our chefs have worked hard to create an exciting special five course menu with a range of authentic Thai dishes, the flavours of which will be even more enhanced when paired with Jonathan’s wine selection – a not to be missed event for those who are fans of Thai food and enjoy fine wine.”

Jonathan added: “Flavour pairings between food and wine are a fantastic way to really take a dining experience to the next level. I’m looking forward to meeting diners at Mantra Thai to take them on a flavour journey – with a lesson on how to pair food and wine, as well as an introduction to some delicious wines from our South African vineyard.

“At Avondale our commitment to promoting life does not only lead to Mother Nature’s approval of our healthy, balanced vineyard ecosystem; it also ensures the premium quality of our unique, naturally-made, slow wines which are full of life and character and will be excellent accompaniments to the exotic flavours of Thai cuisine.”

Tickets are priced at £65 per person and can be booked by calling Mantra Thai on 0191 232 6080.
