Rarely seen show takes to the stage at Gala

Screen Shot 2016-05-13 at 13.08.02Theatre-goers have a rare opportunity to see a musical masterpiece as the award-winning English Touring Opera take to the stage at Durham’s Gala Theatre.

Set in the aftermath of the Trojan War, the revival of composer Christoph Willibald Gluck’s seldom seen Iphigénie en Tauride has garnered five star reviews.

Robin Byers, Durham County Council’s service manager for place and experience, said:

“Shows like this help demonstrate the breadth and diversity of what Gala has to offer.

“We are delighted to be able to attract companies of the calibre of English Touring Opera to Durham as part of our eclectic live programme.”

The stark and beautiful show sees Oreste and Pylade shipwrecked on the island of Tauride, where the king, Thoas, demands they are sacrificed.  At the centre of the the drama is Iphigénie who, forced to live among her enemies, holds Oreste’s life in her hands – unaware he is her brother.

The performance by the Olivier award-winning English Touring Opera company, which is sung in French with English subtitles, takes place on Tuesday 17 May at 7.30pm.

Tickets, which cost between £10 and £26, can be bought online at www.galadurham.co.uk, by calling the Gala Theatre box office on 03000 266 600 or by visiting the venue in person.
