Ashington based – Saving Energy Renewables North East – has been awarded with New Business of the Year at this year’s Northumberland Business Awards, held at Linden Hall to celebrate the county’s business excellence.

Established in 2014 following on from the success of its Essex sister company – Saving Energy – the company’s mission was to bring the most vulnerable people in the area out of fuel poverty, whilst helping to save the environment.

And having secured major contract wins in the region – including the installation of solar PV to almost 800 residential properties in the most deprived areas of the North East on behalf of Arch, The Northumberland Development Company and Northumberland Aged Mineworkers Home Association (NAMWA) – the company is very much achieving its mission.

Speaking about the award, Garry Coulson, Managing Director at Saving Energy Renewables North East said: “It is a huge honour to receive this award and be recognised as New Business of the Year at such a prestigious event. The team and I are extremely proud of what we have achieved since establishing the company.

“Recognising a gap in the renewables energy services market in the North East – and returning to my North East roots – setting up the business allowed us the opportunity to boost the region’s economy and provide long term job opportunities.”

The company has a strong commercial model, focussed on providing job opportunities to local people who have experienced long term unemployment, giving full training and teaching new transferrable skills. At present, 40 per cent of staff have been recruited directly from unemployment. They have all received full training and offered a secure career path.

In recognition for its commitment the company has secured Investors in People. To date the company has taken on 5 apprentices and will be looking to recruit a further 5 over the course of the next few months.

In the company’s first year of trading, turnover was in excess of £4million, which the business anticipates will grow by 30% at the end of next year’s financial trading.

Garry added: “The standard of entries in this award category was extremely high, making the award even more of an achievement. I would like to think that other businesses in the region could look up to us and follow our lead of the best practices we have implemented. We would be more than happy for businesses in the area to come to us for advice and we will be very willing to help in any way we can.”

The company is currently working on a major solar installation, having been awarded a contract in conjunction with Global Heat Source, to install solar panels to around 1,000 council properties in Darlington which have led to a further 4 positions being created.

Saving Energy Renewables North East offer a range of renewable products and services to both domestic and commercial customers. Their end to end services extend from biomass, solar PV and solar thermal through to external wall insulation, LED lighting and boiler changes.
