Residents Reminded Over Correct Use of Recycling Bins

Screen Shot 2015-06-02 at 16.44.32MIDDLESBROUGH residents are being reminded of the importance of using their recycling bins correctly.

The alert over fortnightly kerbside collections follows issues over items wrongly placed in the blue-lidded general recycling bins.

Under the current system, blue-lidded bins are for glass jars & bottles, paper and cardboard, cartons, food tins and drink cans and plastic containers e.g. milk bottles, yoghurt pots, and ice cream tubs.

Green-lidded bins are for garden/green waste and black bins are for all other domestic refuse that can’t be recycled and all food waste.

However problems have been increasing recently, with a number of items incorrectly placed in blue-lidded bins, items such as

  • Takeaway containers/packaging
  • Pizza boxes
  • Food waste
  • Nappies
  • Clothing/textiles
  • Plastic Toys
  • Small electrical items (toasters, kettles etc)

New legislation means the facilities receiving our recycling are undertaking increasingly thorough inspections and mistakes could mean that loads are being rejected and have to be disposed of as refuse.

Councillor Tracy Harvey, Middlesbrough Council’s Executive Member for Environment, said: “People are keen to recycle more than ever, and we’re grateful for their efforts which are making a real difference.

“We will continue to do everything we can to help residents recycle, but it’s also important that householders use the right bins when putting out their waste, to ensure it reaches the right destination.

“We’re always happy to offer advice and there’s lots of information on the Council’s website.”
