Contractors for Highways England will be resurfacing nearly 2 miles of the A66 from Thorpe Farm Centre to the junction at Smallways starting on Monday 11 April.
The work will be carried out under a 24 hours a day contraflow system, which means traffic travelling in both directions on the same side of the carriageway so drivers can continue their journeys safely.
Highways England project manager Chris Corcoran said:
When complete, this project will provide drivers with safer and smoother journeys along this stretch of the A66 in County Durham.
Every effort is being made to ensure disruption to traffic and local residents is kept to a minimum, and we’ll be using a contraflow system on the westbound carriageway to keep vehicles running in both directions on the dual carriageway.
The project is expected to be completed by mid-May, depending on the weather. Some local side roads will be affected by the contraflow and local diversion routes will be in place.
