Milton Keynes, UK, 28 October 2024 – Seven larger than life rugby icons reunited for a unique off-the-field challenge – to test out the new Volkswagen ID. Buzz in the ultimate test-drive.

The new Volkswagen ID. Buzz introduces seven-seater practicality with a third row of seats, and the ex-pros were challenged to see if they could fit all seven sets of their broad shoulders and up to 6ft 9’ frames inside.

British & Irish Lions legends, including ex-England captain Lewis Moody, Irish Grand Slam winning captain Rory Best and former Wales centre Jamie Roberts, were among the all-star group.

Once fierce competitors who came to blows on the pitch, the sports legends came together for a banter-fuelled catch up on life after rugby.

With Moody behind the wheel, the legends completed their line up for an all-star 7’s team when they picked up former Scotland second-row Jim Hamilton, ex England back-row Martin Corry, France’s legendary flanker Serge Betsen and Ireland legend Shane Horgan.

The epic reunion saw lively chats about their playing days as the players traded stories about team bus antics and shared thoughts on how they’re finding the transition into a post-playing career, as they swap tour buses for school buses.

In the hilarious dashcam footage, viewers get a sneak peek into the behind-the-scenes jokes you would come to expect from a rugby changing-room as the players interact with IDA, the car’s voice assistant.

Opening up about life after rugby, Moody said: “As a kid I was an absolute VW nut, so when the ID. Buzz came out, I was on it straight away and the kids are all over it.

“It’s usually my wife who likes to drive so I relished the opportunity to get behind the wheel again and think the guys will agree I was the best choice of driver on the day! The fact that we managed to fit all the lads in there and still had room for rugby gear in the boot is pretty impressive!”

Jim Hamilton, the Scottish lock who’s the biggest of the bunch at 6ft 9inches, added:
“Fitting into the back of most vehicles can be an uncomfortable experience, but even though I was stuck in the third row with [Martin] Corry I was surprisingly comfortable with lots of leg room. I’ve got four kids and they’re always arguing over who has to sit in the middle so this car would be perfect! ”

Eve Tyers, Head of Marketing, for Volkswagen, said: “It was amazing to reunite some of the greats of the game and watch them get up close and personal with the new ID. Buzz. We wanted to show that if a crew of rugby legends can all fit in, so can you and your family!”

At almost five metres long with three rows that offer five-, six- or seven-seat configurations, the ID. Buzz brings iconic design into the age of electric mobility. Not only does the increased length create even more space for luggage, it allows for the installation of a bigger 86kWh battery for an even greater range. As with the normal wheelbase ID. Buzz, a seven-seat layout delivers exceptional family-friendly flexibility, and with the seven-seat configuration the third row can be removed completely.

State-of-the-art infotainment, Driver Assistance systems and a flexible space concept provide mobile comfort that sets new standards. The ID. Buzz seven-seat is now available to order with prices starting from £59,035 – for more details please see: https://www.volkswagen-vans.co.uk/en/electric-vans/electric-and-hybrid/id-buzz.html
