An Exclusive Christmas Show! Ward Thomas plus Wildwood Kin

Thursday 7 December, 7.30pm, Sage One

Record breakers, chart toppers and country crossover stars Ward Thomas are returning to Gateshead for an exclusive Christmas show this December!

22 year old twins Catherine and Lizzy made history with their stunning major label debut when it reached the top spot in the U.K. Album charts, by becoming the first ever UK country act to achieve the feat. On top of that extraordinary achievement, the album stayed in the top five for three weeks: a rare accomplishment.

Written in Nashville in 2014, Cartwheels, was the song that kick started the entire writing process for the album. Reflecting on experiences of young women (and men!) everywhere, it tells the sad tale of someone who refuses to accept that a relationship is over. The heartbreaking story is brought to life by the sister’s stripped back vocals and beguiling harmonies.

Leveret + National Youth Folk

Saturday 17 February 2018, 8pm, Sage Two

Leveret is a unique collaboration between three of England’s finest folk musicians. Andy Cutting, Sam Sweeney and Rob Harbron are each regarded as exceptional performers and masters of their instruments. Together their performances combine consummate musicianship, compelling delivery and captivating spontaneity. Leveret’s music is not arranged in the conventional sense and instead they rely on mutual trust, listening and responding. Their playing is relaxed and natural, drawing audiences in and inviting them to share in music making that is truly spontaneous and yet deeply timeless.

Leveret’s music is firmly rooted in the English tradition but sounds fresh and new. With their albums New Anything and In The Round and over a long string of sell-out gigs, the trio have built a strong reputation as consummate musicians and captivating performers. Now they return with Inventions, a new album of original material that brings Leveret’s trademark groove, energy and intuitive playing to bear on a set of new tunes composed by the trio, three of today’s finest tunesmiths in the folk field.

The National Youth Folk Ensemble launched in October 2016, bringing together talented young folk musicians from across England to create and perform inspiring new arrangements of folk music.

Expect modern arrangements of folk tunes from England and beyond, alongside new compositions drawing on traditional music, all created and performed by these rising stars.

The National Youth Folk Ensemble is an English Folk Dance and Song Society project supported by Arts Council England.

Newcastle Bach Choir – Handel’s Messiah

Saturday 24 February 2018, 7.30pm, Sage One

Although Handel’s most famous work, Messiah, is associated with Christmas, the text of Part Two deals with the Easter story, making it highly appropriate for performance during Lent.

This performance is largely based on a version Handel directed in London in 1743 and includes several numbers not usually heard. The Newcastle Bach Choir and period instruments of Newcastle Baroque are joined by a stellar line-up of Samling soloists and international countertenor Lawrence Zazzo.
