Steel Benders UK (SBUK) have delivered a “huge well done” message to young athlete George Martin Murray after his achievements gained deserved recognition at the Gus Robinson Hartlepool Sport Awards.

The Hartlepool Sport ran event, which attracted around 200 people at Hartlepool College of Further Education, celebrated the incredible successes and volunteering efforts of others across the town.

SBUK sponsored the Primary School Sports Person of the Year Award and were thrilled to see George of Manilla Cycling claim the prize.

George, who has just completed a stellar season on the cycling circuit, beat out stiff competition from Seaton Carew Cricket Club’s Henry Riches and Oaksway Netball Club’s Deborah Chiweshe to claim the coveted award.

“It’s been a fantastic season, and I am already looking forward to next year,” said George, who has consistently pushed himself to the next level.

This year saw him step up to national competitions, where he secured impressive first, second and third place finishes in three separate events. He also showed remarkable endurance in a gruelling three-day national event, claiming third, fourth and fifth places.

Even with the competitive season over, George’s dedication continues. He is tackling 30-45km endurance rides on weekends to maintain his fitness and build on his speed and stamina ahead of next season.

This commitment to training, alongside his talent, has seen him named Manilla Cycling’s boy of the year for the fourth year running, and crowned champion of the League 2000 Under-8s and the North-East Youth League.

SBUK feels that sponsoring this award was about more than just supporting local sport, it was about recognising the passion of young athletes like George.

“We are incredibly proud to have sponsored the Primary School Sports Person of the Year Award, congratulations to George and all of the others shortlisted across all categories,” said Tania Cooper, Managing Director of SBUK.

“George’s achievements are truly inspiring, and he is a fantastic role model for young people everywhere.

“The awards ceremony was a wonderful occasion, with over 200 people coming together to celebrate the sporting talent in our community.  It was a night to remember, and we are delighted to have been a part of it.”

The company was keen to support the Gus Robinson Sport Awards, which are organised each year by Hartlepool Sport, the sport arm of local charity The PFC Trust.
