Twelve months ago Hambleton District Council joined forces with the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) to encourage company bosses to join the federation by offering heavily discounted rates.
It was the first scheme of its kind in the UK to help businesses access advice and support as and when they need it. A three year funding package was secured to enable 180 new members – 60 each year – to sign up using a discount.
The FSB waives the joining fee and the district council provides a £50 subsidy towards the cost of membership.
So far 82 businesses have used the discounts and become a member with one – Langver in Thirsk, manufacturers of ratchet tensioners for curtainsiders – saying it’s been a huge boost for them.
Owners Scott Taylor and Claire Matten said: “We are very excited about our membership of the Federation of Small Businesses. We feel confident knowing we have expert advice at hand should we need it. It allows us to focus on what we are good at, which is getting quality products out into the market.”
Leader of the Council, Councillor Mark Robson said he was pleased to see that local businesses were signing up to the FSB scheme.
“We recognise that businesses that are supported are more likely to survive and prosper – so to be able to help 180 of them is a huge boost for the district,” he said. “We work closely with the FSB and this is an important part of our ten year economic strategy which aims to see Hambleton as a place to grow.”
And Simon Williams, FSB North Yorkshire Regional Chairman, added: “We are delighted to be celebrating one year of the scheme. We have seen lots of interest in membership from Hambleton businesses and it is another great example of their Business Friendly Council work.”
The offer includes access to a legal helpline, HR support including contracts, independent advice on tax and VAT, telecom benefits, small business insurance, mobile card payment terminal and savings on business banking.
