SCHOOLGIRLS STRIKE DOUBLE GOLD IN DANCE WORLD CUP

TWO pupils from a North-East school are celebrating becoming world dance champions.

Millie Turley and Ellie Bancroft, pupils at Polam Hall School in Darlington, struck double gold at the Dance World Cup in Portugal.

Millie, 15, of School Aycliffe, won the Acro Solo, and Ellie, 15, of Darlington, won the Acro Duet with her dance partner Sorcha Stephenson, of Middlesbrough.

The girls travelled to Braga for the prestigious competition and it is a rare feat for two girls from the same school to win gold medals.

Ellie, who attends Nadine’s Academy of Dance and Performing Arts in Hartlepool, said: “I cried when the result was announced, and the national anthem played. We worked really hard to get there and to win is a dream come true.”

Ellie, who has three older brothers, plans to go to Stockton Riverside College after she leaves Polam and then hopes to continue her training at a dance school in London. Her ambition is to be a professional dancer.

Millie attends MacAdam School of Dance in Newton Aycliffe and also hopes to pursue a dance career.

Polam Hall principal Kate Reid said: “To have one world champion is wonderful but to have two is just incredible. It shows what can be achieved through talent and hard work, and we are so proud of the girls.”
