Durham Music Service takes over Sage Gateshead this month (March) for a showcase performance
As part of Durham County Council’s Education Development Service, the Durham Music Service will be showcasing 600 talented young people from County Durham and Darlington on Saturday 19 March.
Free performances, not to be missed, will take place on the Concourse and include music from choirs, ukulele ensembles, folk bands, wind bands and brass bands. The event will begin at 1.30pm until 6.30pm.
In the evening there will be a Gala concert in Hall 1featuring bands, choirs, orchestras, samba groups and a signing choir from three of County Durham’s specialist schools. The concert is already a sell-out.
The Hall 1 concert featuring Durham County Youth Orchestra will be conducted by Jamie Phillips, associate conductor of the world famous Hallé Orchestra.
Jamie Phillips recently conducted the Los Angeles Philharmonic. The Durham Music Service has partnered with the Hallé Orchestra for the last three years, culminating with concerts and workshops with the full orchestra in Darlington in June 2016.
Michael Summers, manager of music education, Durham Music Service, said: “This is an outstanding opportunity for County Durham’s young people to perform with a professional conductor of this calibre.
“Since October students and teachers from Durham Music Service have performed over 300 concerts involving 9,306 students with a total audience of 45,000.
“This will be the third time we have performed at the Sage Gateshead, following previous sell-out concerts in 2010 and 2013 and this promises to be an amazing evening showcasing the talented young people of County Durham and Darlington.”
