Smailes Construction expands with new unit

An expanding construction company based in Northumberland has announced further investment and commitment to its ongoing success as it officially opens additional premises.

Smailes Construction, whose head office is situated in The Fourways in the centre of Amble, continues to go from strength to strength.  Launched three years ago, the company has increased its turnover from an initial £500k to £1.5 million in its second year of trading and is anticipated to top the £2 million mark at the end of the company’s current financial year this October.

Smailes’ model of doing business, where the emphasis is placed on early collaboration between the client, the architect and the supply chain, has been so well received by both new and existing clients that the specialist construction company decided to launch huxmar, a subsidiary which specialises in designing and building bespoke summerhouses and kitchens in order to broaden the range of services it can offer, as well as the value of contracts it is able to deliver.

This continued growth is such that it has been necessary for Smailes to take on a new unit signing a five-year lease on new premises at Amble Industrial Estate, Amble.

To mark the acquisition of the new unit, Smailes Construction’s managing director, David Smailes was recently joined by staff, supply chain partners, students from James Calvert Spence Spence College (JCSC) and England and Newcastle United footballing legend, Peter Beardsley, at an official opening event.

The new unit, will not only double up as a workshop for the assembly and manufacture of bespoke joinery items, it will also be a dedicated showroom for huxmar’s range of kitchen and summerhouse products.

Speaking about this latest investment and further commitment to the company’s development, David Smailes said:

“In the past three years we have seen significant growth in annual turnover together with an increase in opportunities to win work across a diverse range of sectors including education and commercial property as well as high-end residential property.  The increase in demand from the private client sector led to the launch of huxmar and hence the need to take on more space.

“The new showroom will allow us to grow the huxmar brand, as prospective clients are able to see first-hand the range of kitchens available and the standard of workmanship they can expect when choosing to work with us.”

Speaking about his decision to invite students from JCSC to attend the event, David continued:

“I’m passionate about both promoting the construction industry as a sector with great career opportunities as well as supporting the local community whenever possible. As such I enjoy supporting JCSC with its Construction Level 2 course by organising site visits for the students and delivering presentations to encourage them to consider entering the industry. As Peter is such a good role model and demonstrates that success comes in many forms, I thought the students would enjoy meeting him and the rest of the construction team. “

Smailes Construction currently employs 16 and is expected to announce the arrival of a number of new staff in the coming weeks.
