North East Connected

Hopping Across The North East From Hub To Hub

s300_M42_dusk_940x600Work has started to install the new snow poles on the exposed part of the A66 and is expected to take 10 weeks to complete.

To carry out the work, there will be lane closures that will be carried out in 2.5 mile stretches between the Bowes snow gates and the Cumbrian border 24 hours a day. A 50mph speed limit will also be in place.

Chris Corcoran, project manager at Highways England, said:

“The new snow poles will be more visible and easier to maintain in future.”

“Although the work will take place mostly during the day, the lane closures will be in place 24 hours a day.”

“Keeping the lane closed overnight significantly improves safety for our contractors as the lane restrictions don’t need to be removed and replaced at the start or end of every shift.”

“We will be making every effort to complete other jobs such as vegetation clearance overnight while the lane closures are in place.”
