Screen Shot 2016-03-15 at 09.40.38Ward councillors are backing the development of new homes for residents in South Shields due for completion in spring 2016.

West Park ward councillors, Gladys Hobson, Anne Hetherington and Norman Dick visited the West Way site situated on West Way, South Shields, to view the progress of the 33 new homes.

The project consists of a mix of two bedroom houses; two bedroom bungalows and two bedroom apartments for residents aged 55 and over or living with somebody with a disability which will be available for rent through South Tyneside Homes.

The new homes are among 400 properties to be built over the next five years by the Borough’s new independent housing company, South Tyneside Housing Ventures trust.

Councillor Gladys Hobson, on behalf of the West Park ward councillors, said: “It is really exciting to see the project nearing completion.

“We welcome the creation of these new properties in South Shields and we’re sure those who move in will be proud to call them their homes.”

Brian Scott, Company Secretary of South Tyneside Housing Ventures, added: “This promises to be a fantastic development which will provide quality social housing to help meet local need.

“Once finished, they will be rented out via South Tyneside Homes, and will provide the local area with much needed new homes.”

South Tyneside Housing Ventures Trust was set up by the Council and South Tyneside Homes to take the lead on building new homes in the Borough. It is run by a board of seven members, including three local councillors.

Lee Francis, area director for Keepmoat in the North East, said: “We are thrilled to have been a part of this great project and support the council to build some quality, affordable new homes which meet local demand.

“The sustained interest is testament to the need for more housing solutions in South Shields and highlights the drive behind South Tyneside Housing Ventures five year plan to deliver this.”
