Former pupils of William Newton Girls School and all other previous users of Norton’s Education Centre are invited to attend a special event to say farewell and celebrate the building’s history.
On Wednesday 10 June from 2pm people will be able to tour the building, meet old friends and view exhibits from years gone by. At 3pm there will be a final assembly in the former school led by Reverend Ian Fulcher, Minister from Norton Baptist Church. The service, which will include an address and hymns, will give thanks for the use of the building over the years.
Built in 1939 the building was named after Councillor and Alderman William Newton, a Chairman of the Education Committee and Mayor of Stockton-on-Tees (1934-1936). Over the decades it has also been used as a Further Education centre and played host to numerous groups, organisations and meetings such as playgroups and Sunday services.
Councillor Norma Wilburn, Stockton Council’s Cabinet Member for Arts, Leisure and Culture, said: “So many people have fond memories of this building as former pupils of William Newton Girls School and users of the Centre. The Council has committed to future community activity on part of the site but in the meantime this celebration event will be a fitting tribute to the mark the end of an era and we’d welcome everyone interested so please do come along and join in.”
