As a former smuggling den for whisky during US prohibition, Seaham Hall, on Durham’s Heritage Coast, has a fascinating connection to Spey Whisky. So, what better place to treat Dad to a whisky-tasting weekend?
Experience history come to life down in the Georgian manor house’s old cellars – where the original smuggling tunnel can still be seen! Seaham Hall’s Cellar Master will hand-select a variety of whiskies for you to sample, including the famous Spey.
As a secret bottling and distribution centre for Scotch whisky, Harvey (the owner of the Spey brand) would smuggle the whisky through the tunnel and down to Seaham Harbour, and load it onto ships bound for the Bahamas in the dead of night.
Dad’s Whisky Weekend costs from £495, including one-night DBB (two sharing), cellar whisky-tasting experience and 1 x 60-minute ‘Men’s Work it Out Massage’. Valid for stays between 20 May 2019 and 28 June 2019.
