Stanhope has been revealed as the best-rated UK holiday destination, according to research released by Sykes Holiday Cottages.

The holiday cottage provider analysed thousands of guest reviews and found that the market town took the top spot – based on feedback on a range of factors including cleanliness, comfort, facilities and the guests’ overall experience.

Two County Durham destinations actually made it into the top five, with Middleton-in-Teesdale coming in fifth, thanks in part to its beautiful North Pennines surroundings.

Other UK locations in the top 10 include Berwick-upon-Tweed in Northumberland, the small North Yorkshire village of Sleights and Castleton in Derbyshire.

Graham Donoghue, CEO at Sykes Holiday Cottages, said: “It’s interesting that Stanhope has beat off competition from the bigger and perhaps better-known staycation destinations – but I’m not really surprised given the quality of the accommodation on offer and everything there is to see and do locally.

“The popularity of the town, and region as a whole, is a brilliant opportunity for those in the area with a second home or money to invest, and I’d just encourage anyone thinking about holiday letting to get in touch.”
