Strategy aims to tackle alcohol-related harm

203Ways to tackle issues linked to excessive alcohol consumption are set out in a report to be considered by councillors.

The Alcohol Harm Reduction Strategy 2015 – 2020 has been co-ordinated by Durham County Council’s Public Health Team on behalf of the Safe Durham Partnership.

The aim of the strategy is to encourage both adults and young people to take a responsible approach towards alcohol consumption and reduce the harm that can be caused by drinking too much.

Cllr Joy Allen, Cabinet member for safer communities at Durham County Council, said: “This strategy is designed to tackle problems which can be caused by drinking too much alcohol, such as crime and disorder, health problems and the negative impact it can have on the lives of children and young people.

“This is the third Alcohol Harm Reduction Strategy for County Durham and aims to build on the success of previous strategies.”

Members of Durham County Council’s Cabinet will be asked to endorse the strategy when they meet next Wednesday (October 21) at The Witham, in Barnard Castle.
