A new mural has been unveiled at Newcastle Combined Court – designed to revitalise the witness suite, creating a more relaxed and peaceful environment.

Art and design students from Gateshead College were commissioned to create artwork for the walls of the witness suite, encapsulating the Court’s core values while also helping to establish a space to help witnesses relax prior to court appearances.

The Tale of Two Cities project gave students vital experience in responding to a live brief for a commission.

Marsha Boundey, a witness liaison officer at Newcastle Combined Court, said: “It’s been wonderful to work with such an exceptionally talented group of young, enthusiastic and dedicated people.

“Their creativity from hand drawings to digital design is clear to see but what really impressed me was the students’ work ethic and the way they managed the project from start to finish.

“Not only did they understand the importance of getting our values across to the public; but they showed real passion and dedication throughout to create the artwork that will add a calming atmosphere to our witness suite.

We wanted to create a space which would make witnesses feel calm. The students completely understood what we were trying to achieve and chose the blue colour scheme for the mural, which is a very soothing colour that helps people relax.”

“We would like to say a huge thanks to the all of the students involved; they have a bright future ahead of them.”

The students created the artwork by taking photographs from both sides of the River Tyne, looking from the court and towards it. The final mural features hand drawn iconic landmarks of Newcastle and Gateshead, including the court. They then digitised the designs and added colour.

Louie Finnigan, 18, is in the first year of his art and design course.

He said: “It’s so amazing to see our project across the walls of Newcastle Combined Court; we’re really proud of it.

“After leaving college, I would love to work in the creative sector.  I chose Gateshead College because you get to work on some great commissions like this, it’s been a great experience.

“We get to work on real projects for real businesses and organisations and are able to get under their skin just as professionals would in an actual job role.

“Our teachers are absolutely fantastic and constantly provide opportunities to gain hands on experience within the art and design industry as well as encouraging and supporting us all in reaching our full potential.

“We’re over the moon that Newcastle Combined Court love the final result as much as we do.”
