Osbornes Bar, at Osborne Road, Jesmond has launched a monthly artist-in-residence scheme with students from Northumbria University and Newcastle University, giving them the opportunity to exhibit and sell their paintings.

The bar, owned by Malhotra Group PLC, will be displaying a different student’s work every month, providing them with the rare opportunity to showcase their skills before a large audience.

“It’s great to be able to give talented students a platform to show off their work,” said Atul Malhotra, director of the Malhotra Group PLC.

“Some of the artwork that we’ve seen so far has been absolutely fantastic, it really fits in with Osbornes’ quirky décor and is proving a real talking point with our customers.”

The current exhibition – which runs throughout April – features the work of Michaela Hall, 19, a first year Fine Art student from Newcastle University.

“My work is very imaginative, I tend to draw from imagination as opposed to still life or specific scenes because I like the idea of capturing an image that will never reappear,” she said.

“It’s really exciting to have my work exhibited somewhere as busy as Osbornes. It’s unusual for students to have the chance to sell their work so I’m really grateful for the opportunity.”

Michaela’s artwork is also available to buy, with prices starting from £35.

Osbornes Bar, which is next to Scalini’s restaurant and the New Northumbria Hotel in Jesmond, features an extensive drinks menu to complement its American-style food menu and the Turkish Seesha Garden diner menu.

The drinks menu offers customers everything from hardshakes, milkshakes and cocktails to real ales, craft ales, American beers and premium spirits.
