Students Face a Maths Conundrum

Screen Shot 2015-12-21 at 11.09.49TEAMWORK added up to success for students as they spent the day embroiled in mathematical conundrums.

Mathematical construction with sticks, computer house-building, tests of memory,  origami, puzzles and problem solving were among a host of activities in a special maths day for Year 7 students at Richmond School and Sixth Form College.

Sixth formers helped teaching staff stage the event, which was designed to stimulate interest in mathematics and promote teamwork among the 250-strong year group.

Assistant head teacher Scott Lunn said: “Students formed teams of five of mixed abilities.

“They were challenged and stretched mathematically but the event was also designed to be great fun and promote competitiveness and teamwork.”

In one exercise teams were challenged to build pyramids from sticks and rubber bands against the clock, with structures assessed for both form and strength.

In another challenge they had to use their IT knowledge to build a virtual house, while their folding skills were tested to the limit as they were asked to construct a box from coloured paper.
