An apprentice, who found a training placement after attending a construction sector careers briefing, is urging others in the area to go to this year’s event.
The event – targeted at students, parents and guardians – will inform attendees of the benefits of apprenticeships, and how they can lead to a successful career in the construction industry.
It will be held at Newcastle City Library on March 17 by the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) in collaboration with the National Careers Service and Newcastle City Council.
The event will emulate the success of one held in the city last April. Many young people in the region were able to secure apprenticeships following their attendance.
One was Owen Corbett, 16, who was offered an apprenticeship with BDW North East (Barratt Homes) after meeting the company at last year’s event.
The former student at Joseph Swan Academy, in Gateshead, said: “I could not recommend attending the construction event more, it was very informative and made me determined to pursue a career within the industry.
“I met many employers from across the region who gave my peers and I lots of advice on what they look for when recruiting young apprentices.
“I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at BDW North East so far and am looking forward to building a successful career at the firm and achieving further qualifications.”
Carly Hinds, Partnership Manager in the North East for the National Careers Service, said: “The event is a fantastic opportunity for young people to learn about the vast career opportunities in the North East construction industry.
“The event aims to inspire school leavers to take charge of their future and pursue something that can lead to respected qualifications and invaluable work experience.
“It is great to see how successful such events are at placing apprentices.”
Leanne Land, CITB Area Delivery Manager, said: “We invite young people and their parents to come along to our event. It is vital for the region’s young people to be informed about today’s jobs market and the opportunities available to them.
“The construction industry provides a range of careers for young people seeking employment. Many of the training programmes on offer allow both on-the-job training and further education.”
Tony Austin, BDW North East (Barratt Homes) Project Manager, said: “It is fantastic to see such a keen interest in the construction industry from young people in the North East.
“Owen has been a great addition to our team and has a very bright future ahead of him. We are very impressed with Owen’s progress throughout the year he has been with us. The event is an ideal way of finding suitable recruits.”
Similarly to last year, employers from across the North East will be on hand to provide students with advice on future jobs, training opportunities and what they are looking for in their young recruits. Some apprentices and graduates will also be in attendance to share their experiences.
The event aims to inform students on the valuable practical skills they can gain with an apprenticeship. Many of the prospective careers in the area will allow individuals to progress to higher education and achieve University degrees and degree level qualifications.
